Newport Wetlands NNR, 10th June

I don't normally go looking for caterpillars deliberately - I usually see them by chance. Today I saw an oak eggar, 14 mullein, a  lackey and a few hundred peacock butterfly larvae. Over the past few weeks I have also seen  numerous drinkers, one yellow-tail, a garden tiger and one green-brindled crescent.

There were also a lot of freshly emerged small tortoiseshell butterflies, 2 large skippers, a red admiral, one ringlet and several meadow browns.

  1. A case of bring in the new, as I also had both Small Tortoiseshell and Meadow Brown on Friday as well many battered/worn Common Blue and a couple of end-of-season Dingy Skipper in the Sirhowy valley.
