August 2021
Various locations
The month of August produced a few sightings of the Jersey Tiger moth in and around Chepstow.
I first caught sight of one in the south of Chepstow town on the morning of the 9th August. Funnily I questioned as to whether to take the camera out with me this morning and decided not to. I normally do but, today it was a small mistake which could have ended up being costly as the sun was moving slowly up to meet the moth on the side of this building. I quick return home to collect the camera remedied the situation to obtain a photograph or two.
Eleven days later on the 20th August an early visit to the back garden at home took on another surprise sighting of the moth. This time it was on some foliage and duly obliged me a couple of photographs without the need to rush off to get the camera.
Another sighting, this time at night during a survey at St.Pierre's Great Woods near Mounton, on the 27th August. It was nice to find out it did like coming to a light trap too from my perspective.
Two other sightings were recorded that I know of, one via an e-mailed photograph from an Chepstow resident and another we made personally on the 29th August. Our other sighting occurred when on a walk to Beachley Point on the Gloucestershire side of the River Wye and quite close to being under the Severn Bridge, we spotted one flirting in the hedgerow in sunny conditions, most probably looking for nectar source.
