Haisbro Avenue, Newport, 28th June 2023

Sheila ran the MV Robinson overnight and in the morning recorded 44 species. They included 20 Elephant Hawkmoths, 2 Small Elephant Hawkmoths, 20 Box-tree Moths, a Lychnis, the first Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing of the year and 3 Mottled Beauty.

I asked last year, but no one replied: are other moth'ers catching lots of Box-tree Moths?

  1. Hi Kevin, I'm catching them in various different places, sometimes non-urban. By that I mean not exactly near box hedges. Obviously the closer you are then higher the results I should imagine i.e. foodplant. Also I've found this moth tends to be not shy in hiding away like most moths when daylight arrives. It will quite happily rest up in shaded areas by day and remain in view, hence more records of it will come forward rapidly to the Vice county database I believe.
