Small Eggar larval web, Whitson, 19th May 2023

I cycled my normal, annual route - up Chapel Road and then around to Whitson, looking for small eggar larval webs. I only found 1, in Whitson. I found none last year or the year before. Around 15 years ago I was finding up to 20 or more. The caterpillars were much smaller than I would have expected this late in May - I guess the cold early spring has delayed there hatching/development? Hopefully I may find some more in the next couple of weeks.
