Isolated wood brings a few surprises

 1st August 2021

Llyna Wood, Trellech

A difficult wood to get to this wood, so any information one can get from here is would be considered fairly valuable on the Lepidoptera front. I had only managed to visit here 5 times before but never in a summer month, so things could be interesting for tonight's visit. The daytime temperature had gotten to 21c at Chepstow and generally there were variable amounts of cloud and sunny intervals. This evening though clouds began parting to leave some long clear spells. Thankfully though the temperature didn't drop away to badly.

On the moth front 142 moths arrived whilst I was there of 49 species. 6 were localised with one Scarce B category. There were quite lot of 'Footmans' over 4 species- Common-20, Dingy-16, Rosy-2 and Buff-8.

A single Blomer's Rivulet appeared around the light which was nice and unexpected. 4 Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing arrived too and although I do see the species on occasion I don't remember seeing 4 at once too often.

Black Arches (14) kept things busy around the light and a Twin-spot Carpet was a nice addition to the macro total tonight. So all in all a good information gathering exercise at an awkward isolated wood.
