Uskmouth foreshore, 4th August

I put the actinic Skinner trap half way up the sea-ward side of the sea-wall last night. This morning I recorded 30 moths of  11 species. 18 Southern Wainscots, 1 Smokey Wainscot, 1 small Rufous, 1 Pinion-streaked Snout, 1 Common Carpet, 1 Ringed China-mark, 3 Common Rustic agg, 1 Dark Sword-grass, 1 Single-dotted Wave, 1 Chilo phragmitella, and 1 Donacaula mucronella.

  1. That's only the 5th county record of Donacaula mucronella, following 3 others from the Uskmoth area and one from Gwastad Mawr.

  2. Thanks Sam. It looked a lot better in the flesh than in this photo. The dark area on the wing looked black and it looked like a straight line dividing the dark area and light area. I've worked out how to turn the flash off on my camera phone now, so hopefully some better pictures in the future.

  3. My lack of understanding of these coastal wetland moths is highlighted by this one and Nick's. I glanced briefly at your moth, Kevin, and thought it looked fine for Donacaula, but a closer look made me worry: the palps are too short, there are ciliary lines, and its face looks rather Tortricidish. I now thing it's Bactra robustana: a large Tortricid that feeds on Sea Clubrush. Sorry!
