 Martin's Moth Night - 21st July

In tribute to Martin Anthony and in celebration of his achievements as the past Macro-moth and Butterfly recorder for the county we are hosting "Martin's Moth Night" on what would have been his 75th birthday.  Please join us as we light up the sky for Martin at one of our organised events at either Magor Marsh or Ynys Hywell Farm.  Alternatively, if you are not able to join us why not set your own trap on 21st?

Magor Marsh
Meet at Magor Marsh Nature Reserve visitor centre at 8.30pm. Whitewall Road, Magor, Caldicot NP26 3DD. What3Word walkway.herbs.signified. Grid reference ST 428 866.

After entering Magor, take the right turn signposted ‘Magor Square’ and with a brown tourist sign for Magor Marsh below. Follow the road round to the right (signed Llandevenny/Redwick’) and past the ruins of the Priory. After crossing a narrow railway bridge, turn left immediately and follow this road for about 400m and reserve entrance is on the right.

Ynys Hywel Farm
Ynys Hywel Lane, Cwmfelinfach, Crosskeys.  (Postcode - nearest: NP11 7NY, What3Words: ranch.regular.eggplants, Grid Ref.ST196907

Directions: from Cwmfelinfach village center turn into Islwyn Street and follow the brown signs posted to Ynys Hywel Centre.  After crossing a bridge over the Sirhowy river follow the road to the left up hill and under an old stone railway bridge (avoid turning right - this only takes you to the centre and not the farm).  Travel approximately half a mile up the hill and the farm is on the RHS.  Turn right, through the green barrier and follow the track a short distance - the farm is on the bank on the LHS.

Facilities: there is ample parking and toilet facilities.  Tea/coffee will be available.

The site: the farm resides on the hillside in the beautiful Sirhowey valley.  Ancient woodland and grazing farmland surround the area and an excellent assemblage of species of moth are anticipated - see blog post for previous catch details - Monmouthshire Moth and Butterfly Group : A Night at the Farm - National Moth Night 19th May 2022 (gwentmothing.blogspot.com).
