Goat Moth larva at Newport Wetlands NNR

Steve Wilkinson found a Goat Moth larva on the Wales Coast Path at Uskmouth on 28th August. I believe this is the 1st record of Goat Moth larva here and the 1st record of the species since 2001. I've recorded the larval boring in cut willow, but not the actual larvae.

  1. Well done on that discovery. An unusual and striking caterpillar which could be easily Identified if found. Looks quite large too, probably a final instar stage I guess.

  2. Yes, definitely final instar - it's the only time they come out of the inside of the tree they have been eating for 3 or 4 years.
