Dingestow Court

A Yellow Horned was the highlight of this morning's 40+ moths of 12 species that came to MV at Dingestow Court (set on 12/3/2016).  It's only the third of this species I have caught her in 20 years of trapping.  March Moth x3, Satellite x1, Brindled Pug x3 and Double-striped Pug x2 were alongside Oak Beauties, Early Greys and various Orthosia species.  Spring has sprung!

A few moths turned up at the MV on the patio last night & it was quite plesant sitting out with the trap due to the lack of that damn wind. Temps dropped out by early hours though.

Spring weather prompted short burt of extra light in the garden this evening: Oak Beauty x2, Common Quaker x2 and a single Yellow Horned.

Slow start to spring

Having noticed a few moths flitting about in the headlight beams recently, I decided to dust off the MV last week and ran it over an evening.  The outcome - not a single moth!  On Thursday night, however, a single Diurnea fagella turned up at the outside light.  Well it's a start....

My January & February mothing at home has been hard going. Even the security lights at work "Imperial Park" have not been very productive.

With a total of just 17 moths. 8 macro & 2 micro species recorded.

Chepstow

25th January

It was a mild day on the whole for January on the 24th getting to 13.1c here in Chepstow. Variable cloud amounts overnight into the 25th saw the temperature fall to 7.5c, which was again not too bad for this month. 

Prompted by the milder phase I though I would chance a walk around the town and given I've not seen too many moths around in the months of January or February I felt this might be an good opportunity.

Luckily I was rewarded with my efforts by managing to find a few moths.

Pale Brindled Beauty and 2 Dotted Border were sighted along with an out-of-season Double-striped Pug and a long deceased Buff Ermine.

This is second time in a month I've come across Double-striped Pug.

I do wonder if the exceptionally mild December and warmer than average January may have enticed this species out early?

On the evening of 1st January I spotted a Mottled Umber on the window of a convenience store on Clarence Place, Newport. A good start to the mothing year!
